Trauma is more than a story about something that happened. The emotions and physical sensations that were imprinted during trauma are experienced not as memories, but as disruptive reactions in the present. In order to regain control, you will need to revisit the trauma: sooner or later you will have an opportunity to confront and engage what happened to you, but only after you feel safe, and will not be re-traumatized by the experience. That is where EMDR comes in.
